Aoife Mooney is a graphic and typeface designer from Dublin, Ireland. She holds an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, UK, and a BA in Visual Communications from Dublin Institute of Technology. She has worked both in design studio settings and as an independent graphic design professional in Ireland and the UK, before moving to New York City in 2011 to work as a full-time typeface designer with the Hoefler & Frere-Jones type foundry. In her three years with the foundry, she worked as part of the design team there on the design, development, and production of many typefaces, including the popular Idlewild typeface.
She is interested in socially responsible design, design for inclusion, collaborative and emergent models of design practice, as well as in the role of modularity and rationalism in design approaches and process. She has taught classes in graphic design and typography, as well as workshops in typeface design, and continues to work as an independent typeface and graphic designer alongside her role as Assistant Professor at the School of Visual Communication Design. Her custom lettering, logo, and typeface design work has been featured in the Communication Arts Typography Annual, Page magazine, and the blogs, Type Everything, From Up North, The case and point, We love typography, and Lettercult (best of 2010/11). Her work has also been shown in a number of exhibitions, including Graphic Birdwatching’s Graphic Design Walk as part of the London Design Festival 2012.
