The written word can spark the imagination, communicate hard facts, or even serve as a barrier for those who can’t decipher its encoded system. Reading transcends media. Digital devices and traditional processes enable reading to take place just about anywhere in the world. Designers are often called upon to shape written materials and the experience readers have when translating odd-looking shapes known as letterforms into thoughts, inspirations, and actions.
This semester we’ll inspect how reading and the experience it enables can be designed, more clearly understood, and extended.
